Called Khongoryn Els (Khongor's sand) in Mongolian, the country's largest sand dunes, continuing out 20 km in width and 180 km in length, reaching 800 meters in its highest areas, is located in Sevrei soum Omnogobi province.
The sand dunes change its color each hour of the day, from yellow to silver between dawn and dusk. The tallest parts of the dunes make sound like an airplane engine in a windy day, thus it is called 'Singing Dunes". Climbing up the tallest sand dunes is challenging, but once up there the view of absolutely gorgeous. The Khongor River flows along the sand dunes and forms beautiful oases with green grass bed.
One can easily sail through the sand on the back of a camel. During summer months, nearby camel herders come for business so it is easy to find camel tor rent as well as warm meal and accommodation.
