Gobi is famous for its dinosaur remains. When you visit Gobi desert in Mongolia, be sure to see the place called The Flaming cliffs. It is also called Falling Flames because of its reddish appearances. The name “Flaming cliffs” was given by a person called Roy Chapman Andrews, who was a zoologist in Natural History museum in New York. Flamboyant, adventurous person he was, he decided to venture to central Asia to look for the origins of mankind. Roy Chapman Andrews had red Osborn’s book about the origins of mankind kindling in central Asia. Therefore he came to Gobi desert in Mongolia and made several expeditions and survey. He was looking for ancient people’s bones and skeletons. Andrews didn’t find them. Instead, he found dinosaur fossils, fish fossils and most importantly, the first ever dinosaur egg was discovered from the Flaming cliffs, which made the place famous all over the world.

In the early periods of 1920s, newspapers and magazines brought the news of world’s first discovery of dinosaur eggs in the southern Gobi desert by Roy Andrews. Roy Chapman Andrews is a real life of Indiana Jones. The character of Indiana Jones was based of Roy Chapman Andrews. But Roy Chapman Andrews was best known for his discoveries in Flaming Cliffs. Over a period of 1.5 years his team dug out 100 dinosaurs, including Protoceratops Andrewsi, which was named after Andrews. His findings also includes Velocipedes or in other words “Swift robbers” which was presented in Jurassic Park movie. He also found Oviraptor, who paleontologists believe that it was an egg robber.

It was not just Andrews that made expeditions here. Mongol-Polish and Soviet explorers also worked here. The remarkable 80 million year old fossil of Protoceratops and Velociraptor was locked in battle.

Still today, Flaming cliffs, or Bayanzag as Mongolians call it, attracting not just tourists, but also paleontologists. Last expedition was conducted by Mongol-US joint team in 2018 and still many new species of dinosaur remains were found.  It is believed that the Flaming cliffs was under sea or a large lake because of its fossil fish remains.

Today, the findings from Flaming cliffs are located on American Natural History Museum, Central museum of dinosaurs in Ulaanbaatar, Museum of Dalanzadgad in Umnugobi province and in Natural History museum in Ulaanbaatar.

Flaming cliffs is an area with sandstones and these sandstones keep the fossils intact. After heavy rain and wind, the area is eroded and fossils, which are hidden, are also get exposed. At the Flaming cliffs you can walk around to see the excavation site. But in Gobi desert, it is usually sunny and hot. Therefore you need to have sun screens. Hike at the Flaming cliffs is usually short but very interesting. Be sure to wear hiking boots because the area can be slippery and there are many ridges that sometimes there is a chance to fall. Walking sticks will also be quite helpful. It is also a windy place.

Around Flaming cliffs there are many camps such as Gobi tour, Gobi Oasis 2, Bayanzag and so on. Each of them offer good service and hospitality. You will enjoy the visit to Flaming cliffs and who knows, you might stumble into a dinosaur fossil.
