Bayan Ulgii Province

The westernmost of 21 provinces of Mongolia, Bayan Ulgii translates to Rich Cradle in English. Capital of the province is Ulgii, a place where Khazakh people are majority, but also Uriankhai, Khalkha, Dorvod, Tuva and Khoshuud ethnic groups diversify the culture.

The Islamic Center of Mongolia is located in Ulgii, uniquely facing towards Mecca. There is also Madrasah (Islamic school) at the same place. The Khazakh majority’s culture is strongly influenced by Islamic traditions.

Bayan Ulgii is famous for the traditional hunting method using trained golden eagles. The captive eagles work in a similar way as hunting falcons. An estimated 80% of the world’s eagle hunters live in Bayan Ulgii. An annual Eagle Festival is held in Ulgii, every October to display their skill with about 70 eagle hunters participating on average.
