Meaning the Monastery oi Tranquil Felicity, the Amarbayasgalant Monastery was commissioned by Manchu Emperor Kang Xi in purpose of serving as a last resting place for First Bogd Gegeen Zanabazar, religious and intellectual leader of Mongolian people. The majestic monastery was built between 1727- 1736 and during its peak there were over 50 temples with 6000 monks in residence. The monastery temples are of one architectural design, unlike Erdene Zuu monastery.
Although the communist purge significantly reduced the monastery size and capacity, it is still one of the most important worshipping temple complexes in the country only after the Erdene Zuu monastery near Karakorum.
Nearest town being city of Erdenet in about 60km to its southwest, road to Amarbayasgalant Monastery requires good off-road vehicle, so buckle up and take the journey to this mysterious monastery hidden within the vast mountain valley.
